Psychological support after a workplace injury

A workplace injury affects more than the injury itself. Time off work, uncertainty about your claim, financial pressure and changes to your routine all take a toll. Anxiety, low mood and stress are common, and they can slow physical recovery when left unaddressed.

Mind-Care provides psychological treatment within the NSW workers’ compensation scheme. Our psychologists are approved by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) and work alongside your GP, your insurer and your rehabilitation provider, so your care is coordinated from the start.

How we help

  • Anxiety and low mood: related to injury, uncertainty and time off work
  • Trauma: processing what happened after a workplace incident
  • Chronic pain: building coping strategies where pain has a psychological overlay
  • Identity and confidence: rebuilding both when injury disrupts routine and purpose
  • Return to work: supporting graded and modified duties
  • Complex claims: managing stressors across prolonged claims

Telehealth for workers compensation across NSW

You don’t need to live near our Charlestown clinic to access SIRA-approved psychological care. Telehealth sessions are available wherever you are in NSW, including regional and rural areas where local services are limited. For many people going through a workers compensation claim, telehealth removes a practical barrier: no travel, no time away from modified duties, and continuity of care if your circumstances change. Telehealth is offered where clinically appropriate.

For GPs, insurers and rehabilitation providers

Mind-Care provides SIRA-approved psychological treatment for patients navigating workers compensation. Our team of SIRA-registered psychologists works with treating doctors, insurers and rehabilitation providers to support recovery, reduce psychological load, and help patients return to meaningful function and work.

You can expect structured, goal-focused treatment aligned with the SIRA Clinical Framework, and regular communication back to you throughout care. Meet our psychologists, including their SIRA approval numbers, on our team page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist under workers compensation?

Psychological treatment under the NSW workers compensation scheme is usually arranged through your treating doctor and approved by the insurer managing your claim. If you are unsure where your claim is up to, contact our team and we will help you work out the next step.

Who pays for treatment?

When treatment is approved under an accepted workers compensation claim, the cost is billed to the insurer under the SIRA fee schedule. If you are unsure about the status of your approval, contact us before your first appointment.

What does SIRA approval mean?

SIRA (the State Insurance Regulatory Authority) regulates the NSW workers compensation scheme, which was previously administered by WorkCover NSW. Psychologists must be individually approved by SIRA to provide treatment under the scheme. Each of our workers compensation psychologists holds SIRA approval, listed on our team page.

Can I have my sessions by telehealth?

Yes, where clinically appropriate. Telehealth sessions are available across NSW, which makes ongoing treatment workable if you live regionally, have limited transport, or are balancing modified duties.

What if my claim hasn’t been accepted yet?

You don’t need to wait for a claim outcome to get psychological support. Other pathways, including Medicare-rebated sessions with a GP mental health treatment plan, may be available in the meantime. Contact our team to talk through options.
